The threat of wildfire — and what you can do to help protect your home
Since the 1980s, the number of wildfires in the U.S. has increased significantly, with longer wildfire seasons threatening more homes, businesses, and land than ever before.
How do wildfires start?
In many cases, wildfires start due to these three elements:
Oxygen is necessary to start and sustain a fire. Air supply is increased by windy conditions.
Heat raises fuel temperatures to their ignition point and ignites fuels. Common heat sources include lightning and human activities.
Fuel is necessary to sustain and carry flames. Fuel can include grass, brush, trees and anything else that is combustible.
What you can do to help protect your home
Depending on where you live and how your home is built, there may be things you can do to help reduce or mitigate damage from a wildfire.
Create a defensible space around your home.
By removing dead or dry plant material from your yard, roof, and rain gutters, trimming trees, and using noncombustible mulch and low-growing, fire-resistant plants, you can create a fire break around your home.
Harden your home
When homes are made with fire resistant materials or processes, they are less likely to burn. They are also more likely to act as a fire break, reducing the size of the fire and helping it to be brought under control.
Consider these options to harden your home against wildfires.
- Roofs: Install a Class A, fire rated material, such as standing seam metal, concrete tile, slate or composite roofing, burning embers roll off before they have time to burn through the material.
- Vents: Install fire resistive vents. During large wildfires, most homes burn from the inside out due to ember intrusion. All vent openings should be equipped with 1/8-inch metal mesh or ember-resistant vents.
- Eaves: Close eaves on your home. Burning embers can get trapped under the eaves of homes if they are not properly enclosed.
- Attachments: Attached wood decks, balconies, fencing and outdoor furniture are susceptible to burning embers which can quickly ignite and enable the fire to reach the home.
