What does boat insurance cover?

Owning a boat offers a unique sense of freedom and adventure. It’s an experience you’ll want to protect, which is why it’s crucial to understand what boat insurance covers and what it does not. A standard boat policy can protect the vessel itself, as well as pay for damage or injury caused to others through liability, physical damage, medical payments, and other coverages. However, many basic policies don't come with high enough coverage limits and may include unwanted exclusions, which may force you to pay additional out-of-pocket expenses if something goes wrong.  There are other types of policies that provide enhanced protection, such as Chubb’s Masterpiece policies, that automatically come with higher limits and broader protections like agreed value and hurricane haul-out coverage, helping ensure your time on the water remains uninterrupted.

How does boat insurance work?

Understanding how boat insurance works starts with knowing that most policies are built around two core coverages: physical damage and liability. Physical damage coverage, sometimes referred to as “Hull & Machinery”, protects your boat, engine, sails, and onboard equipment from accidental loss or damage. Liability coverage, also known as “Protection & Indemnity”, covers your legal and financial responsibility if you injure someone or damage another person's property while operating your boat. Together, these two sections form the backbone of any boat insurance policy.

One of the most important things to understand when shopping for boat insurance is the difference between Agreed Value and Actual Cash Value policies. An Actual Cash Value policy factors in depreciation when calculating your payout after a total loss, which means you may receive significantly less than what it costs to replace your boat. An Agreed Value policy locks in your boat's value at the start of the policy, so in the event of a total loss, you receive the full amount you and your insurer agreed upon with no depreciation deducted. Chubb's Masterpiece policies are written on an Agreed Value basis, which gives boat owners greater peace of mind knowing the value of the boat is already addressed should a loss occur.

What do standard boat insurance policies cover?

These are the core coverages designed to protect your boat and your belongings:

Physical damage or "Hull & Machinery"
provides coverage for accidental loss or damage to the boat and its machinery. This not only covers the hull and the engine(s), but also the sails, personal property, and other equipment required to operate the boat.

Most policies protect against a broad range of risks under a single physical damage coverage rather than splitting protection into separate categories like auto policies do for comprehensive and collision. Whether you experience a collision with another vessel, strike a submerged object while cruising, or face a non-collision event such as theft, vandalism, fire, or damage from severe weather like wind or hail, physical damage is the coverage designed to respond.

It’s your essential layer of protection for the physical integrity of your boat, providing peace of mind whether you are out on the water, docked at the marina, or tucked away for the season.

Personal property: Protects the unattached items brought onto the boat, such as fishing tackle, water sports equipment, expensive coolers, or portable electronics. These items are usually subject to a specific sub-limit and the standard policy deductible. This coverage bridges the gap for valuables that are not part of the boat itself, for you and your guests onboard.

These coverages are designed to protect you and your assets:

Liability “Protection & Indemnity”: Accidents on the water can happen to even the most careful boaters, and liability coverage is what protects you financially when they do. These coverages are here to help protect you if you accidentally injure another person or damage someone else's boat or property.

Medical payments: When an accident happens on the water, medical bills can add up quickly for everyone. Medical payments coverage helps pay for those costs for you and your passengers following a covered accident, regardless of who is at fault. Whether it’s an emergency room visit or follow-up care, this coverage is designed to help you focus on recovery rather than worrying about the bill.

Uninsured boaters: Unfortunately, not every boater on the water carries adequate insurance, or any insurance at all. Uninsured boater coverage steps in to help cover your medical expenses and property damage when the responsible party either has no insurance or does not have enough insurance to cover the full cost of your loss. It’s a simple but important layer of protection that keeps an irresponsible boater’s lack of coverage from becoming your financial problem.

“Optional” Add-on Coverages

Not all boat and yacht insurance policies are the same and can vary greatly between different companies.  Some boat insurance providers limit or even carve out important coverages such as towing services, coverage for trailers, and water pollution coverage, as well as costs associated with protecting your watercraft from damage from an imminent danger such as a major storm. This is often done to make the price of the policy more attractive, but it can put you at risk for significant out-of-pocket costs when you need your insurance most, like when your engine fails and you’re out at sea.

Companies like Chubb include these coverages as part of their core offerings, with robust limits, to offer greater peace of mind and simplicity. This is an important consideration when comparing boat insurance policies as out-of-pocket expenses, such as those associated with towing, can add up quickly when something goes wrong on the water.

What does boat insurance not cover?

While most people focus on what a policy covers, understanding the exclusions is just as important and can make a significant difference when a loss occurs.  While boat insurance provides broad protection, there are common exclusions that policyholders should be aware of before a loss occurs.

Common damages typically not covered under boat insurance include:

  • Gradual weathering and deterioration
  • General wear and tear from regular use*
  • Costs incurred to haul, fuel, or dock the insured watercraft when it is in danger, such as before a major storm (Preventative Measures)*
  • Mold
  • Insect damage
  • Damage from animals or marine life

There are also provisions that may limit or exclude coverage because of where the boat is located or what time of year it is:

  • Lay-up Warranty: You agree to keep your boat out of service and stored during a specific period, such as the winter months, usually for premium savings. During this time the vessel cannot be used for navigation until the specified lay-up period concludes.
  • Navigation Warranty: Specific geographic boundaries where your boat is permitted to operate under the terms of your policy. If you navigate outside these defined limits without prior approval from your insurance provider, you may not have coverage for claims occurring in those unauthorized waters.

Protect your boat all year long

Maintaining year-round coverage for your boat or yacht is a good idea, even for those who winterize or store their vessels during the off-season. Although your boat is not in use, it still remains vulnerable to risks like storm damage, falling trees, or other unforeseen accidents while in storage. Keeping your coverage active year-round ensures you are protected and ready to head back to the water as soon as the next boating season begins.
