Stolen in seconds: Help protect your luxury auto during transport

In recent years, high-end vehicles have increasingly been targeted for theft. While cars can be stolen from anywhere—even from your own locked garage—Chubb claims data shows a significant rise in luxury car theft during auto transport. We have recently seen an uptick in theft claims by fraudulent transport carriers contracted via online dispatch websites.

Key steps to help protect your vehicle

If you’re planning to move and ship your luxury vehicle—or you transport vehicles between properties—it’s especially important to be cautious. Here are key steps you can take to help protect your vehicle:

  • Use only reputable, nationwide car shipping services. Read online reviews and ratings of companies you’re considering.
  • Check licensing and insurance. Ask to see paperwork that confirms the car transport company is licensed and insured sufficiently to cover the full value of your vehicle and other belongings. You should also verify the company’s Motor Carrier (MC) number through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) website.
  • Avoid online dispatch platforms or self-managed marketplace services as these may link you to transport providers that are unlicensed, uninsured, and/or may be engaging in fraudulent activities. Additionally, exercise caution when comparing quotes, as unusually low bids can be a red flag.
  • Discuss security practices with prospective carriers. Ask if the carrier will use secured parking, loading, and storage facilities.
  • Consider using enclosed car transport. While more expensive than open car carriers, enclosed car transport can help shield your vehicle from thieves and the elements.

Quick tips for helping to protect your vehicle every day

Extra caution is warranted when using a car transportation service, but luxury autos and SUVs can be stolen at any time—even from gated communities. Follow these tips every day to help protect your vehicle:

  • Always remove your key fob from your vehicle, even if you’re parked in your garage or driveway. Leaving a key fob in a luxury vehicle is the number one factor associated with car theft.
  • Garage your luxury vehicle. Cars can be more easily stolen from driveways, even if they’re gated.
  • Use alternative transportation in risky circumstances. Consider taking a car service or using an alternative vehicle in riskier situations, such as when traveling. Luxury vehicles can be stolen from airport parking lots and valet services.
  • Vet service providers. In addition to carefully selecting a car transportation service, luxury car owners should vet other service providers, such as car detailers. It is suspected that some service providers share information with car thieves.
