Most of Chubb’s homeowner’s policies provide “all risk” coverage, and physical damage to your home caused by hurricane or windstorm may be a covered loss.

What to do after a storm has hit your home or area

Once the storm has passed, be sure to stay out of any damaged structures, including your home, office, or other buildings, until authorities say it’s safe to go inside. If you are trapped, make noise to get the attention of rescue workers. And follow the tips below to stay safe and minimize injuries and damage:

  • Stay away from loose or damaged power lines and report them to authorities immediately.
  • If you believe your home has been damaged, shut off the electrical power, natural gas, and propane tanks.
  • Cover any roof damage with tarps and cover window damage with plywood until they can be fixed.
  • If you need to use a generator, grill, or other device that uses gasoline, propane, natural gas or charcoal, do so outside – never in the house.
  • Wear sturdy boots, long sleeves and gloves when inspecting your home and any debris. Be aware of hazards such as exposed nails and broken glass.
  • Use your emergency supply of water or boil water before drinking until officials say water is safe.
  • If your artwork got wet or was damaged, blot off excess moisture, remove wet backings, mats and frames and keep in an air-conditioned room, if possible. Contact a professional conservator for assistance as soon as possible.
If there is damage, take photos and contact Chubb to file a claim.
