Lulu Sun’s secret to staying strong — on and off the court

When Lulu Sun burst onto the world stage at Wimbledon, Aotearoa New Zealand fell in love with her powerful game and grounded mindset. But behind the spotlight is a young woman who cares deeply about resilience, wellbeing, and supporting the next generation of Kiwi women.

For Lulu, sport has always been more than competition. Growing up active taught her confidence, courage, and the ability to bounce back—skills she believes young women need now more than ever.

“Injuries, losses, early exits are all part of the journey,” she says. “It’s okay to feel disappointed. What matters is how you reset.”

Her reset rituals are refreshingly human, not superstition or hype tracks, but connection.

“I talk to my team. Saying things out loud helps you understand why you’re feeling something, and it takes the pressure off.”

She applies the same mindset to long-term goals: stay present, stay humble, and take small, consistent steps.

“Long-term goals give you purpose. Small daily steps get you there.”

This focus on stability and long-term thinking goes well beyond the court. “When people feel supported, whether it’s health, financial stability, or wellbeing, they feel more confident taking on life,” she says.

Away from tennis, Lulu finds balance through drawing, hiking, and spending time with family. She’s passionate about sustainability too, giving her time and influence to Sustainable Coastlines.

“If you want a healthy mind and body, you need a healthy planet. It’s all connected.”

Grounded, resilient, and committed to giving back, Lulu Sun is more than an athlete, she’s a role model shaping a brighter future for young women in New Zealand.
