October 2026

We’re updating evidence requirements for Suspension of Cover

We’ve updated the evidence requirements for the Suspension of Cover benefit that’s available under our Assurance Extra product.

We currently require evidence for Suspension of Cover applications for Employer-approved leave and living or travelling outside New Zealand.

From 26 October 2026, if a customer experiences significant financial difficulties within the first 6 months of a policy commencement, evidence must be submitted to support a Suspension of Cover application.

Suspension of Cover

Suspension of Cover is only allowed once a policy has been in force at least three months. There are three reasons why a customer may be able to temporarily suspend their cover:

  • The customer is on employer-approved leave for a continuous period of at least three months; or

  • The customer is living or travelling outside New Zealand for a continuous period of at least three months; or

  • The customer is experiencing significant financial difficulties.

It’s important to note, when a policy has been suspended the customer doesn’t pay premiums and is unable to make a claim. The customer also will never be able to claim for an illness, injury or condition that showed signs or symptoms or was diagnosed within the suspension period.
