Get to know Megan Wei

April 2025

  1. What’s your background and how did you get to where you are now?

I got my Master’s degree in Finance at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. I then worked in New York for a few years before moving to New Zealand to be closer to my husband’s family. After starting with SP Insurance in 2016, I trained as an insurance adviser with the company in 2017. I joined Cigna in 2021, and the rest is history.

  2. You’ve recently returned from maternity leave, how was that experience?

I just had my third baby and so I found it much easier than previous times. It was wonderful to have the opportunity to spend more time with my kids and focus on family. My second child arrived during lockdown and I chose to start my job at Cigna when he was only six-weeks-old. It was a crazy, incredible and unforgettable experience juggling the care of our little one with my husband while we both worked full time from home.

  3. How does it feel to be back at Chubb Life?

Amazing, I love my job and have really enjoyed reconnecting my colleagues, my manager Paul Swain and the teams I work with at ANZ. I’m really enjoying feeling like my brain has kicked back into action, I’m feeling fully charged and enjoying having a busy calendar.

  4. Do you think motherhood has changed the way you support your customers?

Yes definitely, I think I’ve experienced two key periods of growth in my life. The first was when I experienced the culture shock of moving to the US, which was so different to where I grew up in China.

The second was when I became a mum. I’ve grown up so much and have become so much more patient. I also learned to look at things from a lot of new angles. I think those helps me to support my customers throughout the advice process. I’m better at putting myself in their shoes, managing their expectations and guiding them when issues arise.

  5. Why do you think advice is so important?

I think so many people simply set and forget their insurance and so as Advisers we play an important role in helping them think more about their risk and financial situation both now and long-term. With our support, customers can develop a clear plan for how they want to manage their finances and cover their risks. They can be confident they’re choosing the insurance plan that offers the best protection, not only now but in the long-term too.

  6. What’s the best advice you’ve ever received?

My grandma and mum have always instilled in me the importance of maintaining a career as a mother, to ensure you continue to expand your knowledge and can demonstrate to your children what hard work looks like. I’ve kept this front of mind as all times as I’ve had my kids and returned to work each time.

  7. Tell us about your family

My husband Peng and I have been together over ten years and share three children – Valerie (6), Dominic (3) and Beatrice (1). I was introduced to Peng by my aunty who was best friends with my now mother-in-law when I was in New York and Peng was in Auckland. This is an example of the old Chinese saying, “A thousand miles of fate is connected by a single thread.”

  8. What do you like to get up to outside of work?

We love to go to Cornwall Park in One Tree Hill and set up a picnic. Our big kids love riding their bikes while our youngest crawls around and we try our best to relax. We also love to find new restaurants that have kids’ play areas. Our favourite is “My Kitchen” in One Tree Hill. We also love going to the swimming pool.

  9. What are you watching right now?

I’m big on watching YouTube and playing candy crush. I follow a lot of YouTube bloggers and enjoy watching them try new things, travel to new places and experience different cultures. I follow cosmetic content creators to get the latest makeup recommendations. I enjoy following a series on street food which always makes me eager to find a place to try it in Auckland.
