Chubb is today the world's largest publicly listed industrial insurer. With its own offices in 54 countries and long-standing partnerships, Chubb offers property and casualty insurance for individuals and businesses worldwide, as well as accident and supplemental health insurance, reinsurance, and life insurance for a diverse clientele.
The insurer has been operating under the renowned name Chubb since ACE Limited acquired Chubb Corporation in January 2016.
ACE Limited was founded in 1985 in response to the then-existing lack of excess liability and directors' and officers' (D&O) insurance in the US insurance market. A few forward-thinking pioneers recognized this need and helped form a consortium and raise the necessary capital to establish an innovative insurance company. The founders, 34 blue-chip companies from a wide range of industries, including healthcare and pharmaceuticals, manufacturing, transportation, utilities, oil and gas, banking, and the automotive industry, formed an impressive list of sponsors.
From its early days until the 1990s, ACE experienced rapid growth driven by product diversification, strategic partnerships, and acquisitions. A significant turning point for ACE was the acquisition of the international and domestic property and casualty insurance business from Cigna Corporation, the Insurance Company of North America (INA). With this acquisition, ACE gained access to INA's global network and 200-year history.
In the following decade and beyond, ACE continued its growth trajectory and international expansion both organically and through strategic acquisitions. During this time, ACE significantly solidified its reputation as a first-class insurer with outstanding service and a unique global network.
When ACE acquired Chubb in 2016, it was already one of the world's leading insurers and had a client base that included the largest multinational corporations as well as private individuals and families around the globe.
The origins of Chubb Corporation date back to 1882, when Thomas Caldecot Chubb and his son Percy founded their own marine insurance business in the New York waterfront. With initial capital of $1,000 per company, raised from 100 large trading companies, the fledgling firm initially focused on insuring ships and cargo.
The Chubbs understood how to turn risks into opportunities and help their policyholders avert disasters before they even occurred. Around the turn of the century, Chubb already had close relationships with insurance agents and brokers who placed their clients' business with Chubb.
For Chubb & Son, size was never the measure of all things, but rather the performance and achievements upon which it was based. On the company's 75th anniversary in 1957, Hendon Chubb, who had joined his older brother Percy in 1895, remarked: "I think in the USA there is a tendency to place too much importance on the size of a company. To me, size is more of a byproduct of doing your job well."
