Here's what you need to know...

It is that time of the year again!

Custom has it that during this year-end festive period, people send cards, decorate their homes with a Christmas tree and beautiful yuletide ornaments and prepare a traditional turkey meal. Then, there are the endless presents to buy for your loved ones and friends. The presents you give say a lot about you. Not only does it say that you like someone enough to give them a special present, it also shows them how thoughtful and perceptive you can be when it comes to gifting them. Jewellery and artwork specifically are gifts which can be quite personal.

Here are some tips that will help you find the perfect jewellery and artwork gifts:

Know the tastes of your loved one

Does your partner like traditional things or is he/she inclined to novel, eccentric or unconventional styles?

In the case of jewellery, look at what your partner wears and what's in their jewellery box. If your special someone often chooses simple designs, avoid buying bold or vibrant pieces.

When it comes to art, some people love paintings that depict beautiful sceneries or flowers. Others love art that mesmerizes and delights with bold abstract images with sweeping strokes of colour. There are also many other forms that people like to collect such as bronze sculptures, photographs, Chinese antiques and even ceramic vases. You may even try to expand your loved ones’ horizon by buying them something different and original.

Lifestyle and space

If your partner is an active individual, don't buy jewellery with high settings as the stones can fall off when they are accidentally hit against a hard surface. This is also true when buying a watch, as dainty or fragile pieces will not be able to withstand heavy activity.

If you decide to buy a piece of artwork, think of the space where it will be placed. Is it going up on a wall in an apartment or in a house? The size of the space should be considered as you may not want the piece to look too hemmed in or risk being damaged by dangerous items placed next to it. Think of how the artwork will bring more character to the space based on the theme of the room.

Do your research

Read up to become familiar with some terms when purchasing jewellery or art. For jewellery, check out some online guides and websites to help you understand terms like diamond clarity and cut, grading of gemstones, the difference between precious and semi-precious stones. For artwork, you have a choice between oil or watercolour paintings, photographs and prints. Do also remember to check if the piece comes framed, whether the gallery will install the artwork for you and if they will provide proof of authenticity for the artwork.

Christmas is a special time not only because of all the celebration and tradition that surround the season. It is also that time to let your family and friends know that you care for them and have made an effort to find that special gift. It is the thoughtfulness, the love and appreciation of knowing that once they open your gift, nothing is more precious than seeing the joy reflected on their faces.
