In this episode, Alain Belda discusses how the challenges of Latin American politics and legislation can often be overcome by entrepreneurial capability, pointing out the business sectors with the greatest potential and how he arrived at some of his own profitable investments in the region. Mr. Belda also discusses the importance of integrating sustainability in industry and the need for the area workforce to close the education gap.

Bio

Mr. Belda was employed for four decades at the Alcoa Group. In 1969 he was hired by Alcoa Aluminio, Alcoa´s Brazilian affiliate, and held a number of financial and planning positions until being named President of Alcoa Aluminio in 1979. He later assumed the additional responsibility for Alcoa Latin American operations. In 1982, Mr. Belda was elected Vice President of Alcoa, the parent company. In 1997, he was elected President and Chief Operating Officer with responsibility for all operating activities, and from 1999 to 2008 served as President and Chief Executive Officer.

From 1997 to 2012, Mr. Belda served as a Member of the Board of Directors of Citigroup Inc. and from 2009 to 2016 on the Board of Directors of IBM. Since 2009, he has been a Board Member of Renault S.A. as well as leading several associations and councils related to education and charity, in Brazil and abroad.

In 2009, Mr. Belda joined Warburg Pincus based in São Paulo as a member of the firm´s Executive Management Group. He leads the firm’s investment efforts in Latin America and provides strategic counsel across the firm’s portfolio.

Mr. Belda holds a degree in Business Administration from the Mackenzie Presbyterian University.

Juan Luis Ortega, Chubb

Bio

Juan Luis Ortega is Executive Vice President, Chubb Group and President, Overseas General Insurance. He has executive operating responsibility for Chubb's general insurance business in 51 countries outside of North America, including commercial P&C, traditional and specialty personal lines, and accident and health (A&H) insurance. Overseas General is comprised of two major businesses: one with distribution through retail brokers in five regions of the world – Europe, Asia Pacific, Japan, Latin America and Eurasia & Africa – and the other an excess and surplus lines company with distribution through brokers in the London wholesale market and Lloyd’s. Mr. Ortega’s scope of responsibility includes all products, underwriting, claims, actuarial and support functions related to these businesses.

Mr. Ortega has 20 years of insurance industry experience. Prior to his current role, he served as Regional President of Latin America from 2016 to July 2019 and Regional President of the company’s Asia Pacific operations from 2013 to 2016, a period which included ACE’s acquisition of Chubb.

Mr. Ortega has also served as Senior Vice President, A&H, for the company's Asia Pacific and Latin America regions.
