This year, volunteers from Chubb’s general insurance operation and former-Cigna worked together to organize an educational day trip for 100 middle-school students from Prongmadua Wittiyakom School to Don Hoi Lot, a sandbar in the Samut Songkhram province.

Employees and students learned about plastic pollution and the 3Rs of waste management – reduce, reuse and recycle through game stations and various activities. Participants also got to experience the mangrove ecosystem and clean up the sea while on boat rides. In addition, we made 12 waste bins from recycled plastic bottles which were donated to the Don Hoi Lot community.

Prior to RDS, a series of activities was also organized internally to raise awareness about plastic pollution among employees.

2020: Chubb encourages youth to reduce plastic usage in Thailand

Chubb Samaggi Insurance Public Company Limited (Chubb) participated in the company’s annual Regional Day of Service (RDS) by focusing on the theme of Education@Heart. This year, educational sessions were organized to educate lower secondary students from the Teach for Thailand network nationwide, Chubb employees and the general public about the problems plaguing the environment and the effects of plastic waste in particular.

Chubb collaborated with the Teach for Thailand foundation to organize an educational trip for 100 secondary school students (grades 7 to 9) under their network from Prongmadua Wittayakom School, Phattharayan Witthaya School and Pianpinanusorn School. They were accompanied by 100 Chubb volunteers on the visit to Khlong Khon Mangrove Forest Conservation Center in the Thai province of Samut Songkhram.

The students and volunteers learned about environmental and sustainability concepts, the importance of resource efficiency, how to upcycle waste and developed an awareness of the value of natural resources. During the event, participants were divided into groups for an upcycling workshop, where volunteers transformed discarded plastic bottles into new pencil boxes for the students.  The volunteers then tie-dyed old fabric bags with coconut-husk dye before everyone worked together to plant seedlings in the mangrove.

Chubb decided to launch an educational scholarship for winners of a drawing contest with the theme of Dream Nature in My Community. The contest was open to all Grade 7 to 9 students from Teach for Thailand’s network, and garnered more than 200 entries.

These grants worth a total of 105,000 Thai Baht will help the winners with their education

2019: Say Yes To Less Plastic

Chubb Samaggi and Chubb Life in Thailand joined forces to further the regional social campaign known as Regional Day of Service through an Education@Heart activity. Chubb collaborated with the Foundation for Environmental Education for Sustainable Development (Thailand) to educate and promote correct understanding about the mangrove forest ecosystem and marine pollution caused by plastic waste. The initiative also included the presentation of a whale-shaped steel-wire trash bin to Aeamsuree School (Samut Prakarn Kindergarten) to be used to collect used plastic bottles for future recycling. The activity was held at the Bangpu Nature Education Centre in Samut Prakarn Province.

Chubb welcomed 100 primary students of Aeam Suree School, a school in the community affected by plastic waste, to join 150 Chubb volunteers  in the Education@Heart activity to learn about the mangrove forest ecosystem as well as the threat of plastic waste affecting the ecosystem, marine life, and people.

The participants were put into groups for icebreaking activities and then engaged in in-depth learning focused on theory in the morning and practical applications in the afternoon.  The afternoon session consisted of a mangrove forest walk to study the forest’s flora and fauna and a cleaning-up of the beach.  Each group was assigned a certain type of waste to collect such as plastic bottles, glass bottles, plastic bags, foam, rubber and dangerous waste.

Other than the external activities that Chubb has participated in with the students, last October Chubb Samaggi organized an in-house event to educate its employees about the dangers of plastic. The event included a Chubb flea market for the employees under the concept “Say Yes to Less Plastic!” in light of the current excessive plastic waste in the city.
