People Focus: From the middle up…

Sara Mitchell, Chubb’s new Head of Corporate Division for UKI at Chubb, takes some time out of her day job to talk to Regional Roundup about her new role and priorities over the coming months.

Q. Sara, congratulations on your new role, can you tell us a bit more about it?

A. I’m responsible for overseeing the corporate, or middle market, segment for the UKI region.  This includes our overall strategy and P&L for this customer segment, as well as having responsibility for sales and distribution, our Manchester underwriting centre, product development in partnership with the product teams, and technology initiatives such as Chubb Ignite.

Q. How are you finding things and what have you been up to in your first few months?

A. Very good! To head up the middle market portfolio is incredibly exciting. It’s our largest customer segment at Chubb and arguably our biggest focus for future growth. By some estimates, middle market companies are projected to grow at around 7% per year –and we want to provide the risk and insurance expertise that allows them to achieve that.

Since coming into the role, it’s been a really busy time getting to meet the teams and understand what’s happening on the ground.  I have been spending my time getting to know our product teams in our regional offices around the country.  We’ve also announced some key changes to how we organise ourselves:

  • Launch of new London region, headed by Emma Bartolo, to complement our other UKI regions – Midlands and the Southwest; the North; Scotland; and Ireland.
  • Creation of a new industry practices product cluster to bring together our market-leading expertise for Life Science, Info Tech and Entertainment, headed up by Karen Strong –a longstanding Chubb expert and leader.
  • Launch of Chubb Ignite, our new, improved online platform for brokers in the UK and Ireland, allowing brokers to quote and bind within minutes.

Q: It’s a big remit.  What areas are you focusing on in the coming months?

A. Chubb’s middle-market offering is differentiated by its combination of industry specialisms and multiline capabilities.  We see great opportunity to grow in the middle market through partnerships with brokers who share our values – including in the independent broker segment.  Our aim is to tailor our proposition and offer each of our brokers the service that they want. That means matching our offering to each brokers’ needs. Right now, we’re in listening mode – how can we make ourselves easier to do business with, and how do brokers and their clients want us to further develop our products and services?

Q. What are your plans to evolve and develop Chubb product lines?

A. This will be critical to growing the middle-market segment. This year we’ve already released several new and enhanced products. Our new MasterPackage product, now tailored for several different industries, is a good example. We also recently enhanced four of our key financial lines wordings in the UK and Ireland, providing cover to clients that suffer financial loss due to criminal or fraudulent activity by an employee or third party. And we have much more in the pipeline, so watch this space –and please let us know what you’d like us to be working on!
