It is relatively easy to imagine examples of dangerous consumer products, which would necessitate a recall for example food products, toys, cars etc. And, in fact, most countries will have a central register of such recalls backed up by legislation. Not so commercial products.
However, recalls are sometimes necessary in the commercial arena:
- A manufacturer of electrical cable had to recall more than 10 million metres of electrical cable after it was discovered that a manufacturing fault had resulted in the cables overheating with a potential for fire or electrocution
- A manufacturer of turbines went into administration after a systemic fault was discovered with the gearbox assembly. An uncontained failure could have resulted in damage or injury
- A manufacturer of cylinders used for containing highly flammable/explosive liquids had to recall a large number of cylinders due to a manufacturing fault which could have resulted in explosion
