Financial Lines Technical Underwriting Manager

Role Purpose:

  • Provide technical renewal leadership to Financial Lines in the NUC.
  • Provide technical support to Financial Lines underwriters.
  • NUC Technical Renewal Unit to be a link between UKI  P&C business leadership, Central Technical Unit (CTU), branch P&C managers & NUC.
  • Drive underwriting best practice, oversight and compliance in NUC.
  • Support senior NUC underwriters and coach NUC underwriters.
  • Retain allocation of current business discipline accounts which would otherwise fall outside of NUC scope (or accounts where have key relationship). Where the technical unit provides support for Financial Lines, this will only be where pre agreed and will not form part of the standard role.
  • Underwrite, trade and provide support in the management of key accounts
  • Provide technical support where required for broker and client visits 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Primary contact for Financial Lines renewal referrals.
  • Primary authority holder
  • Primary trading authority holder.
  • Guidance to NUC on underwriting strategy changes and key accounts (i.e. new broker deals)
  • Proactively driving and supporting the team to achieve above average retention rates
  • Underwriting and handling of complex risks
  • Supporting broker relationships by providing outstanding customer service 

Underwriting Systems:

  • Monitor and Improve utilisation of all mandatory underwriting systems in line with best practice
  • Providing updates/guidance and training to NUC.

Peer Review, Audit & Compliance:

  • Support UKI P&C management by conducting regular peer reviews.
  • Audit and compliance – provide updates and support UKI P&C management
  • Sanctions – provide updates and guidance to NUC UW’s.
  • Drive consistency across NUC Financial Lines

Authority and Training & Development:

  • Identify authority gaps and needs in NUC underwriting team.
  • Work with CTU/FL management to progress authority changes for NUC underwriters.
  • Work with CTU/FL management to identify technical training needs for  NUC underwriters.

Claims

  • Understand new structure, key contact points, liaison and accessing information providing updates to NUC Underwriters.
  • Reviewing claims information (if available) and managing underwriter post loss responses.

 

  • Preferable qualified at ACII or degree level but not mandatory.
  • Relevant experience in a senior Financial Risks underwriting role 

Experience of underwriting complex risks between £10-£150K premium across a range of Financial Lines products. Should include at least three of the following, with a primary focus in underwriting Directors and Officers:

  • Directors and Officers
  • EPL
  • Commercial crime
  • Pension Fund Trustees
  • Financial Institutions
  • Professional Indemnity 

Other areas of experience should include experience of:

  • PLC’s
  • Multinational Placement
  • Exposure to oil and gas, healthcare government institutions – Applicable for D&O
  • Exposure to car dealerships, logistics, precious metals – Applicable for Crime
  • Exposure to risks with claims >£1M
  • Exposure to writing risks with limits of up to £15M on both a primary & excess layer basis
  • Wording and endorsement drafting
  • Delivery of technical training with a proven track record in the development of underwriters
  • External presentations to brokers and clients
  • Management of senior stakeholders
  • Delivering to a financial plan
