Business travel in Australia and around the world slowed down extensively in 2020 due to domestic and international border closures as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. However, now that the COVID-19 vaccine rollout has begun in Australia and around the world in 2021, we are seeing domestic travel steadily increasing and international travel bubbles are opening up. 

Flight Centre recently surveyed Australian business travellers and found that many frequent business travellers anticipated domestic travel to be back in full swing for 2021., finding that[1]:

  • Video conferencing has a place, however in-person contact is always preferred, especially when working with customers; and
  • 43% of business travellers said ‘winning new business’ is the most significant driver in returning to the air, closely followed by ‘client relationship management'.

On 13 April 2021, Qantas outlined that it will resume AU – NZ flights from 19 April with the opening up of the trans-Tasman quarantine free bubble. Qantas will track the vaccine rollout in Australia and work with the Australian Government to manage international travel [2].

Virgin Australia said that it will focus on domestic operations, however will remain flexible with short-haul international travel as it monitors the vaccine rollout and Government advice.[3].

KPMG’s domestic travel market review for 2021[4] found that with the drastic reduction in domestic and international travel over 2020, businesses are now looking at strategies to manage a flexible work environment along with safe business travel within Australia and international borders once re-open.

With domestic travel resuming, the trans-Tasman travel bubble opening up from April 2021, and additional international travel bubbles planned to open up as the vaccine rollout continues, businesses should start to consider preparing for business travel.

  • Baggage, business property, electronic equipment, money or travel documents due to confiscation by customs or any other lawful authority if possession of such item is unlawful; or
  • Items that are left unattended in a public place.
