Chubb Named One of the Best Companies for Gay Employees
--Attains Highest Score Possible on Corporate Equality Index--

Warren, NJ, October 27, 2004—The Chubb Corporation attained the highest score possible (100 percent) on the Human Rights Campaign (HRC) Foundation 2004 annual report card on corporate America’s treatment of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees. This is the second consecutive year that Chubb has received a 100 percent rating.

The Human Rights Campaign Foundation’s report card – the Corporate Equality Index – rates Fortune 500 and other major companies on a scale from 0 to 100 percent on seven key indicators of fair treatment for gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender employees (GLBT).  These include policies prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation or gender identity and health care benefits for employees’ partners.

"For more than a century, The Chubb Corporation has been known for treating its employees with fairness, dignity and respect; therefore we take particular pride in achieving a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign Corporate Equality Index," said John D. Finnegan, chairman and CEO, The Chubb Corporation. "Long before words such as ‘diversity’ and ‘inclusiveness’ held special meaning for corporate America, our company leaders observed that ‘Chubb is as eager to have a good reputation as an employer as it is to have a good reputation as an underwriter.’ Over time, we have found that this principle not only generates good will, but good business. Our policies continue to be guided by the belief that Chubb’s success rests largely on our ability to create an inclusive work environment that motivates all employees to reach their full potential to contribute to results. We are pleased that this has led us to be recognized as a leading employer by the HRC and by the LGBT community."

"Corporate America knows that fair treatment for employees is not just the right thing to do, it’s good for the bottom line," said Cheryl Jacques, president of the Human Rights Campaign. "These aren’t movie ratings.  An imperfect score could mean an unfair firing or families without health care."

The Corporate Equality Index is based on a survey sent to the Fortune 500, the Forbes 200 largest privately held companies and any company with at least 500 employees that asks to be rated or for which HRC has enough information to derive a score. The 2004 report rates 379 companies; 56 companies scored 100 percent.

The Human Rights Campaign is the largest national lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender political organization with members throughout the country. It effectively lobbies Congress, provides campaign support and educates the public to ensure that LGBT Americans can be open, honest and safe at home, at work and in the community.
