Infra-red thermography
One Chubb client who manufactures semi-conductors requested that our thermographer visit to complete an infra-red inspection of their electrical installation. The infrared survey identified a serious hotspot condition within an electrical cabinet which supplied the gas storage facility and the ventilation plant supplying the production areas.

Our thermographer took an infra-red photograph that clearly highlighted the over-heating in the unit. If left undetected, the condition could have resulted in a fire, with severe consequences to the business. In this instance, replacement parts were available from the factory stores. The hotspot identification potentially saved the client many hundreds of thousands of pounds.

Fire-fighting water supplies
One of our clients has premises on a large industrial estate. During an inspection, one of our staff discovered that the estate had a very poor water supply. In the event of a major fire on this site the fire brigade could have had extreme difficulties in obtaining sufficient local water to extinguish the fire. Due to our discovery, the fire brigade got involved and plans were put in place to enhance the water supply by other means.

Basement flooding
As part of their role, our loss control staff have excellent knowledge of local building issues. When inspecting a new development they identified the potential for flooding in the basement arising from the construction method and from environmental factors. The client unfortunately did not have time to remedy the situation before the basement did indeed flood.

Safety procedures
A major multi-national company was under pressure from the HSE following a fatality during construction work carried out by contractors. One of our loss control professionals participated in a working group revising the company’s construction and contractor safety procedures and then delivered a bespoke training course to over 50 managers at six sites around the UK. Feedback from the training was fantastic and delegates reported that they now feel much better equipped to manage construction projects safely.

Risk assessment
A provincial theatre group wanted to provide a work experience placement but were unsure how to carry out the required young persons risk assessment. One of our loss control professionals provided a risk assessment template and guidance which allowed the theatre to complete the assessment immediately.

Workstation
In an office of around 30 people, one worker was suffering neck and back problems from using her computer. A Chubb loss control professional carried out a detailed workstation assessment and suggested simple, inexpensive changes that made the worker much more comfortable. We then helped the company establish the in-house capabilities and procedures to do their own assessments in future.
