Chubb Offers Medical Benefits to Transgendered Employees

WARREN, NJ, November 15, 2011 – The Chubb Group of Insurance Companies has extended its medical benefits to transgendered employees and dependents.

“This is a natural evolution for Chubb, where our inclusive environment demonstrates our commitment to fair and equal treatment for all employees,” said Trevor Gandy, senior vice president and chief diversity officer for Chubb.

Chubb’s announcement reinforces a growing trend among employers and insurers who are recognizing sex reassignment as a medically indicated, rather than optional, procedure. Thirty-nine percent of Fortune 500 companies offered transgender-inclusive health benefits this year, up from 1% in 2004, according to research by the Human Rights Campaign.

Chubb has a history of supporting workplace diversity. A pioneer in offering benefits to domestic partners in 1995, Chubb established its Gay and Lesbian Employee Network, one of several diversity groups organized in the home office and branches worldwide. This month, Chubb is one of 70 major companies to file an amicus brief supporting The Gay & Lesbian Advocates & Defenders’ challenge of the Defense of Marriage Act, which imposes burdens on American businesses.

The member insurers of the Chubb Group of Insurance Companies form a multi-billion dollar organization providing property and casualty insurance for personal and commercial customers worldwide through 8,500 independent agents and brokers. Chubb’s global network includes branches and affiliates in North America, Europe, Latin America, Asia and Australia. Chubb is a worldwide leader in insuring fine homes, automobiles, yachts, antiques, classic cars and other collectibles, and personal liability.
